The School of Public Health at the University of Michigan is looking for a creative, talented and enthusiastic Graphic Designer to join our Instructional Services team. This position will create educational content for both online and residential courses. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to select or create compelling graphics to be used in lectures and course sites, as dictated by the topics in the materials. The graphic designer will work closely with Michigan Public Health faculty, staff and members of Instructional Services to produce high quality materials in a digital format.
Collaborate with faculty and course production teams to create and/or acquire graphical elements for use in instructional content developed for online and residential courses.
Research and suggest effective visuals for supporting or enhancing the topics covered in recorded lectures and other materials used in courses.
For all graphical elements (graphs, photographs, cartoons, illustrations, etc.) used in course materials, ensure that they do not come with copyright restrictions that would prevent their use. When they do, or when it cannot be determined, replace them with graphical elements free of such restrictions, If appropriate graphics cannot be found, create originals as needed.
Provide oversight and guidance for the quality of graphical elements being used.
Strive for visual consistency in accordance with the Michigan Public Health brand, to ensure all elements appear to adhere to defined design guidelines, e.g. color schemes, fonts, banners, image resolution and format, etc.
Provide workshops and consultations to faculty and staff on effective use of graphical elements, image search and selection, brand consistency and copyright concerns.
Assist with additional media-related work and responsibilities as needed, and provide assistance in webcasting, video production and editing when requested.
Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related field.
3 years professional experience in graphic design, web design, or a related field, documented through the submission of a portfolio of relevant creative work.
Advanced fluency with designer’s tools, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects.
Significant and applicable knowledge of graphic design principles with ability to conceptualize compelling visuals to support multimedia projects.
Knowledge and experience in creating data graphs and visuals.
Strong interest, experience, and ability to collaborate professionally within a team setting.
Working knowledge of photography and studio lighting.
Demonstrated ability to take initiative, stay committed to projects, and meet deadlines with attention to detail.
