Position Summary and ResponsibilitiesThis position will function as the deputy to the Vice President of Communications. This is a vital role, and so the ideal candidate will have experience working in teams on major communications initiatives. The person in this position will work closely with the Vice President of Communications, and will assist in guiding other members of the department.
Among the key tasks included in the scope of work for this position will be the creation and running of a Vassar news bureau. This will include working directly with Office of Communications staff members to determine the best stories to highlight our faculty, students and employees, write these stories, and then work with Communications staff members to get these stories covered by media. This will include both longer-term feature stories, as well as timely expert responses to breaking news.
The person in this position will also work with the Vice President of Communications on other important initiatives, including working with our newly-formed social media team, our web development team, and various consultants contracted by Communications.
Finally, the person in this position will represent the Office of Communications when the Vice President of Communications is not available. This will include attendance at select meetings and select events.
Qualifications Requirements: 10- 15 years (minimum) experience in public relations inclusive of a minimum five years of agency or journalism experience Bachelor's degree Supervisory experience Experience in publicizing subjects to traditional and 'new' media Experience in the use of common public relations tools such as 'available for interview' and feature stories Experience setting up and running press events, inclusive of placing of multi boxes, risers, press pens, etc. as well as experience in managing events attended by significant numbers of media. Ability to write or edit story articles, press releases, etc. Experience orchestrating photo opportunities and live broadcast media interviews Experience working with education and/or non-profit organizations, as well as more broad public relations experience inclusive of work with corporations, etc. Understanding of media deadlines and news cycles Experience in tracking media metrics such as impressions and unique visitors, as well as in creating recap reports for major initiatives
