This role advises and counsels Medill students empowering them to make decisions associated with their career goals and objectives. Assesses individual situations and circumstances, many complex in nature, and creates, implements and monitors recommendations, partnering with internal/external constituencies and resources that meet student needs. Ensures compliance with all associated policies, rules and regulations.
Advising and counseling focuses on self-assessment, research, job and internship search strategies, reflection, and strategic decision making. This position will especially focus on the career development and support for our graduate journalism student population as well as some limited undergraduate journalism student support.
Some programs coordinated by the role may be held in the evening or on weekends. There is some overnight local, national and international travel required for this position.
Manages & implements strategic plans.
Works with Medill’s Senior Director of Student Services and student services team to develop a strategic plan for engaging students and employers.
Recommends changes & improvements to functional operations to better meet organizational needs & objectives.
Aligns Medill strategic goals with all aspects of career development advising and employer engagement programming and events.
Completes administrative activities such as assessment, operations planning, data management, and reporting.
Provides clear documentation of planning and progress for strategic initiatives to support Medill students and manage employer relationships.
Researches best practices and peer institutions and market/economic conditions and recommends changes and enhancements to improve administrative effectiveness, services and/or resources.
Stays apprised of most current trends in journalism, media and integrated marketing communications opportunities to meet the career development needs of Medill journalism students.
Reviews existing use of technology and recommends changes to incorporate state-of-the-art systems and tools as appropriate into all aspects of the advising, counseling, and recruiting/employment programs.
Works to ensure that the appropriate tools and platforms are enhancing the advising services provided to Medill students and necessary connections for employers.
Researches peer and cutting-edge developments regarding technology and recommends changes and enhancements that will improve delivery of resources and services.
Continually seeks to improve the utilization of tools for a more customizable experience for Medill students, advisers and potential employers.
Recommends changes and enhancements to leverage technology to best serve the greatest number of students as effectively as possible.
Ensures that these tools are representative of the highest standard and the Medill brand.
Proposes budget for programs and services to support the unit's strategic plan.
Develops an annual programming plan to determine and request budgetary needs in advance.
Manages budget for programs accountable for all expenditures
Tracks all expenses and report on all costs, outcomes and benefits of the funding invested in a program.
Implement/provide personalizing counseling and advising that focuses on self-assessment, research, job and internship search strategies, reflection, and strategic decision making.
Provides individualized academic and career development support to all Medill journalism students.
Researches, develops and implements programs and services that enhance the student experience.
Implements programming and advising strategies that are informed by a working knowledge of student development theory.
Connects students with alumni and professionals for employment opportunities. Maintains knowledge of job market trends and hiring practices in a range of fields.
Provides a consistent, unbiased and high quality experience for all Medill journalism students, alumni partners and employers.
Collaborates with student affairs, academic departments, student organizations and administrative offices to develop programs and publicize opportunities spanning a broad range of industries and geographies.
Serves on student affairs committees and supports the initiatives of campus partners to enhance the Medill journalism student experience.
Builds and maintains a network of potential employers and alumni that can provide opportunities for mentoring, internships and/or jobs.
Collaborates with the Medill Director of Alumni Relations and the Northwestern Alumni Association to strengthen alumni support for Medill journalism student employment opportunities.
Engages with associations, organizations, alumni, and employers to encourage experiential education and professional development.
Strives to be active in national journalism organizations as well as other professional associations that promote opportunities in journalism, media and integrated marketing communications.
Identifies opportunities and strategies for short- and long-term growth & expansion of program resources, value and participation.
Works with Medill’s marketing and communications team to develop communication strategies.
Creates & implements program brand identity and marketing & advertising strategy regarding programs and services.
Works with Medill’s marketing and communications team to develop consistent marketing and advertising for all programming and events.
Oversees marketing and advertising of new and current programs, partnering with internal and external key stakeholders to ensure marketing plan effectively targets students, sponsors, employers, etc.
Ensures the thoughtful management of relationships with key Medill stakeholders and works to create new partnerships that align with Medill school goals and values.
Ensures that all advertising and marketing materials accurately represent programs.
Serves as an ambassador of the Medill brand and will ensure that all communications have met appropriate standards.
Implements consistent marketing and brand messages regarding resources and services.
Ensures that all opportunities are communicated with students and partners equitably.
Creates, updates and maintains state-of-the-art website, social networking site, chat rooms, etc. that describe, highlight and explain resources and services.
Maintains a vigilant presence on various platforms to ensure that the utilization of such resources is consistent with the goals and values of Medill and Medill Student Services.
Manages planning and arrangement of programs - meetings, workshops, trainings, events, etc. designed to provide information, promote resources and to build internal and external relationships.
Works with Medill events manager to meaningfully and effectively plan events and programming.
Manages event details including communication, venues, presenters, travel arrangements, materials, refreshments and technology ensuring that all are arranged and completed in an appropriate and timely manner.
Works with Medill Student Services administrative support team in advance to determine their exact contributions and responsibilities for logistical components of program and events.
Researches best practices to enhance, improve, and innovate program topics and delivery to better meet goals & objectives.
Provides strategic opportunities for constituent and key partner input for all events and programming.
Recruits, trains and assigns faculty/instructors to teach programs.
Maintains working relationships with all Medill faculty and provides them with advance notice and clear expectations for partnership in programming.
Supervises creation of components, including curriculum development, lectures, conferences, and seminars.
Works to link Medill career development programming to curricular goals for BSJ and MSJ programs.
Manages development and maintenance of evaluation processes including associated metrics and key performance indicators.
Includes and implements evaluation component for all Medill journalism career development programming and events.
Collect & analyzes outcome measurements and recommends changes & enhancements to improve program.
Commits to the continuous improvement of all Medill career development programs.
Collaborates with internal/external partners to implement changes designed to improve/increase program goals/objectives.
Works strategically with internal/external partners to enhance the Medill experience and brand through outstanding advising and career development initiatives.
Coordinates development & implementation of processes and procedures that ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local & NU laws, regulations, policies & procedures.
Interfaces with government and accreditation organizations.
Works to identify and support new talent in our field and serves as a mentor to graduate students and work study students on our team.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 3 years' career counseling/advising in higher education or 3 years' of industry experience; or other relevant experience required; OR
Successful completion of a full course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a master's or JD or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 2 years' career counseling/advising in higher education or 2 years' of industry experience; or other relevant experience required.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Knowledge of developmental strategies for advising, counseling or career coaching
Knowledge of the utilization of different digital platforms to manage employer relationships and career opportunities
Experience in advising in a university or college setting; or human resources and recruiting
Experience in journalism, media or integrated marketing communications
