The assistant director, strategic communications is an exciting, new addition to the IU School of Medicine Office of Strategic Communications. The assistant director, communications serves as a member of the Office of Strategic Communications leadership team in concert with the director and assistant director, digital marketing. Together, they lead the department charged with elevating IU School of Medicine's position as a thought-leader in research, education and clinical care and engaging audiences important to the School's strategic priorities.
This position offers the unique opportunity to directly shape and impact schoolwide and mission-critical communications on a daily basis. Topics and contributions this role will support range from IU School of Medicine's role a as a national leader in Alzheimer's disease research to the School's work to address other serious health conditions such as traumatic brain injuries, cancer, diabetes and maternal and infant mortality. Entering a growing, innovative and developing team will provide the individual in this role the chance to mentor and coach growing communications professionals and foster relationships across IU School of Medicine.
The ideal candidate for this position is a skilled editor and written storyteller, a coach and mentor to colleagues, and a relationship-driven project manager. To be successful in this role, the individual will frequently use his or her creativity and strategic thinking ability to consult with departments/centers and translate client requirements into successful communications initiatives. The individual will thrive in a fast-pasted, deadline-driven environment, and enjoy establishing standards and processes to improve communications infrastructure.
The assistant director, communications has responsibility for overseeing and developing a team of communication coordinators who serve as embedded content producers in key areas of IU School of Medicine. This position supervises and manages the workflow of the coordinators, as well as coaches and develops each as they serve departmental/center communications priorities, and plan and execute communications strategies within their assigned units. The position also provides expert guidance and consultation to dispersed communications professionals and key leaders throughout the School. For high-level, sensitive, cross-functional, or unsupported areas of the School, this position will assess, plan and produce high-impact content and deliverables aligned to the School's communications strategy.
The individual in this position will take a strategic and collaborative, team-based approach to:
Lead and partner with departmental leadership, School leadership and other high-level stakeholders on the development and execution of strategic communications, tools, products, and media for the School as a whole and for its constituent units. Provide leadership in the development of compelling and impactful content to be used across all platforms, including videos, graphics, photography and other assets.
Supervise and guide the work of a team of communications coordinators who serve as primary support for assigned departments/centers and communications priorities throughout the school, and ensure their work aligns with the School's overall strategic communications plan. Manage workflow of communications coordinators in partnership with assistant director, digital marketing and content marketing manager to ensure optimal alignment of content production, channel usage, execution/placement, and maintenance in accordance with School communications priorities.
Lead creation, implementation and maintenance of work plans for departments and centers across School to meet primary client communications objectives as aligned to School communications strategy as well as optimize deployment of communications coordinators. This work includes scoping communications needs/resources with department and center leadership, enabling coordinator and department/center leadership to develop comprehensive communications plans, establishing measurable objectives to be evaluated at regular intervals, and ensuring appropriate scope is maintained.
Serve as member of departmental leadership team to plan, execute, and strengthen IU School of Medicine's brand and overall position through strategic communications. Collaborate with the director and assistant director, digital marketing in designing and executing goals and objectives of department, as well as maximizing internal teams and developing internal talent.
REQUIRED: Bachelor's Degree in marketing, communications, journalism, public relations or related field, plus 5 years of experience in communications and/or marketing, preferably in science, research, healthcare and/or higher education and 2 years of experience managing and supervising marketing/communications staff.
