The Honors College at West Virginia University invites applications for the position of Development Officer. This position will report to the Dean of the Honors College, and is responsible for development and fundraising. The incumbent will foster and maintain close relationships with alumni and constituents offering programming and events such as the Annual Giving Program, Alumni Relations and Scholarship Programs.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Develop and maintain a comprehensive working knowledge of the WVU Honors College and its programs including its mission, history, current fundraising priorities, and opportunities for private support.
Coordinate all development efforts with the WVU Foundation and comply with all WVU Foundation reporting and accountability standards.
Facilitate a plan to generate annual gifts and sponsorship revenue through personal solicitations, direct mail and publications, electronic resources, social media, WVU Foundation's Mountaineer Line, Mountaineer Mark and the Campus Campaign program, in addition to other special campaigns that may develop for the Honors College.
Coordinate fundraising publications.
Assist with identification of potential donors, determine possible levels of support and prospects interest at the Annual Fund.
Manage a portfolio of select Annual Fund, Foundation Partners, Sponsors, and in select cases, Major Gift prospects and donors.
In coordination with the WVU Foundation, develop and execute a comprehensive donor relations and stewardship plan for the Honors College including acknowledgement letters, donor communications, thank-a-thon and recognition events.
Process gifts, run reports for internal units, and stay abreast of changing development and funding rules.
Attend quarterly meetings of the WVU Foundation and participate in continuing education to keep abreast of best practices in the industry.
Initiate and facilitate collegial relationships and open communications with other Foundation and University development staff, and other University and College constituents in advancing the mission of the College.
Develop criteria to apply for scholarships through the College and manage portfolio of various scholarships.
Plan, organize and implement special events and cultivation activities. Foster relationships with Honors College alumni by hosting events aimed at celebrating the successes of the Honors College.
Travel to make personal contact with prospects and donors, sometimes overnight travel is required.
Bachelor's degree in business, public relations, communications or other directly related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
At least one year of experience managing and coordinating fundraising, scholarship, or alumni events.
Experience writing letters, articles, reports and conducting presentations.
Experience in communication, marketing, public relations or similar experience.
Experience working in a University setting is preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of high-level event planning
Knowledge of basic bookkeeping/accounting principles, and ability to follow Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
Exemplary interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse group of individuals. Demonstrated organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills to maintain accurate filing systems, record keeping, and workload management.
Excellent oral and written communications skills to communicate clearly and concisely with a broad and diverse group of individuals.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and exercise judgment.
Ability to travel, including the ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
Ability to research information and analyze data to arrive at valid conclusions, recommendations and plans of action. Ability to work with diverse constituencies.
Ability to operate office PC utilizing various word-processing software packages and programs such as Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel.
