To advance Puget Sound's brand and raise visibility for the work of faculty, students, and key strategic initiatives through development of communications, public relations, media relations, and marketing initiatives designed to engage prospective students, alumni, donors, and the community. This role is critical to raising Puget Sound's visibility, enhancing our ability to attract best-fit students, deepening alumni engagement, inspiring donations, and building community.
The associate director of communications is a superior writer, editor, and creative marketing and public relations professional who is highly organized and manages projects and produces original content for a wide-variety of projects, including marketing collateral and press releases. The associate director will assist with the development of key strategic initiatives to increase visibility, enrollment, alumni engagement, and development efforts, and is responsible for providing leadership and strategic guidance to campus partners to ensure messages are consistent with brand platform and compelling across audiences. The individual in this role is also responsible for cultivating relationships with local, regional, and national media, identifying opportunities to raise visibility of the university in various media, and supporting the efforts of journalists covering university-related stories. Responsibilities:
Write and create original content for a wide variety of external collateral to include brochures, newsletters, letters, website, presentations, video scripts, etc., designed to serve key audiences, including prospective students, alumni, and donors.
Work collaboratively on the development of marketing and communications initiatives and project management for projects.
Maintain relationships with faculty and students to learn about work of interest for university publications and promotion efforts.
Manage media strategy to include building and maintaining relationships with key reporters and outlets, identifying and pitching story ideas, and responding to current events, news, and inquiries.
Develop, maintain, and update media distribution lists.
Regularly review a broad spectrum of publications, blogs, and other media related to higher education to identify trends and inform decisions.
Distribute press clips to appropriate parties, and manage collection, analysis, and archiving of press clips.
Serve as a resource to colleagues in other departments in terms of how to best present and gain coverage of activities.
Work with Director of Marketing and Communications and Vice President of Communications to prepare talking points and/or provide media training as needed to faculty, staff, and/or students.
Serve as a member of the Communications Emergency team and train regularly on emergency communications.
Reports to Director of Marketing and Communications and works closely with a four-member team, as well as members of the creative and editorial teams that comprise the Office of Communications. May supervise work-study student and act on behalf of the Director as needed. May coach and manage staff as needed. Budget Responsibilities
Bachelor's or advanced degree, and at least five years of professional experience in public relations, marketing and communications, media relations, or related field.
Demonstrated strategic thinking, creative problem-solving skills, and ability to exercise good judgement in making decisions.
Highly organized and accurate; attentive to details.
Strong work ethic; resourcefulness and willingness to take on wide-ranging responsibilities.
Strong editorial and production experience, with print and digital content.
Experience working with or writing for and pitching various media a plus.
Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a deadline-driven environment both independently and as part of a team.
