The responsibilities of UB Admission fall into four main categories: (1) public relations and integrated marketing communications; (2) enrollment management-specific information technology; (3) operations, quality control and reporting; and (4) recruitment. The Senior Admissions Counselor has primary responsibility for international student recruitment, admission and enrollment, and serves as one of the University's Designated School Officials. Secondarily, assists when needed to help serve new, continuing and returning international students and scholars and may oversee student workers. Processes I-20's, has substantive knowledge of SEVIS and F-1 visa regulations and has experience working with state department colleagues affiliated with Education USA and successful leverages EdUSA's social media channels, opportunities like International Student Week and virtual platforms to engage prospective students. Demonstrates familiarity with NACES, IIE and with foreign governments that subsidize undergraduate and graduate study in the US. Works with diplomats, embassies and has personal experience living, working, studying or traveling abroad. Partners successfully with reputable agents, quality recruitment tour vendors and influencers of world university rankings. While international travel may not be required, travel to international representatives in DC and recruitment of a subset of both domestic and international students not only in MD and DC but also, PA, DE, VA and WV will be required as will significant partnership with ESL programs, IB and the Council of International Schools.
Key Functions/Responsibilities/Tasks Utilizing existing technology and knowledge of market and enrollment trends, assist in development of recruitment plans and coordination of activities, though focused on international students. Cultivate prospective students from inquiry through the start of class while developing new, and stewarding existing, internal and external mutually beneficial partnerships. Counsel prospective international students on immigration regulations and requirements for F-1 status. Issue initial attendance I-20 and facilitate school transfers in SEVIS. Track ROI on said activities, institute responsive interventions as needed, and make recommendations regarding optimizing use of existing and new technology.
Represent Admission at internal and external meetings, and monitor, and provide suggestions for improving and facilitating work flow for admission operations. Work with all, including, but not limited to: the Enrollment Management and Marketing division, Deans, program directors, advisors, faculty, staff, businesses, nonprofits, alumni, high schools, online institutions, professional associations, community colleges, colleges and universities, and community-based, and other organizations that serve the college bound to broaden, diversify and strengthen the prospective student pipeline. Assigned a roster of high schools, community colleges, colleges and universities, and community-based organizations via a travel and event schedule that meets students, and existing and potential feeder institutions where they are, and as such recognizes the need for extended, weekend or evening work hours.
Shares accountability for meeting enrollment targets for all students including, but not limited to: diverse, domestic and international freshman, transfer, graduate, military-connected, and new and returning adult students by fostering interest, generating applications and rendering admission decisions. As such, the SC will ensure enrollment is optimized across targeted segments and across academic programs by developing unique goals, strategies and communication for full-time, part-time, Asian, Black, Latino, Native American, multi-racial, LGBTQA, evening, weekend, online, and DACA students paying close attention to diversification regarding geography, socio-economic status, academic interest, potential and talent.
Play a role in the development, scheduling, tracking and reporting on compelling advertising, print, web and email/CRM communication designed to move students along the enrollment process with such timeliness as to provide UB a point of distinction and competitive edge. Assist with drafting, editing, and updating communication to prospective students, including, but not limited to presentations, tour scripts, self-guided tours, transfer and graduation guides, marketing materials, and telephone scripts, ad hoc and annual reports.
Participate in the orientation, training, on-boarding and continued integration of new staff, participating in the hiring process as needed, helping to recruit, train, and supervise all work-study and other student staff, tour guides and ambassadors; managing the front office/reception area, communicating admission policies and procedures and resolving exceptional applicant problems.
Required Education and Experience Education: Baccalaureate degree in Sales, Marketing, Public Relations, Psychology, International Studies, Business, Communications or related field/discipline relevant to the responsibilities of the position.
Experience: Four years professional experience in international admission or recruiting, sales, marketing or related field/discipline.
Preferred Education and Experience Education: Masters degree in Marketing, Communications, Psychology, International Studies, Business or related field.
Experience: Experience: Five years of progressively responsible experience in admission in a higher education institution, with three years active international recruitment experience and a working knowledge of SEVIS and F-1 visa regulations. Experience as a Designated School Official and experience recruiting undergraduate and graduate international students strongly preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Skilled in building brand awareness, attracting, recruiting, and admitting, thereby optimizing enrollment for multiple student types across multiple academic programs. Demonstrated ability in making formal and informal presentations to all audiences across integrated channels including: high school college or guidance counselors, transfer coordinators, career services directors, deans, presidents, businesses, honors students, and first generation students and families. Experience with student information systems, customer/constituent relationship management systems, e-applications, and online forms and presentation/meeting platforms. Ability to lead and act as a team member in a changing environment and support leadership efforts to promote strategic plans, and enrollment goals. Excellent communication skills, including demonstrated skill in oral and written expression of information, ideas, and policies with ability to inspire an audience to action. Ability to adapt to the University style guide and the preferred AP format. The Senior Counselor is able to work with diverse populations and has a proactive customer service orientation that anticipates customer needs. The Senior Counselor is able to creatively solve problems, and has demonstrated skill in managing office and institutional knowledge for best practice succession planning. Valid State of Maryland driver's license and willingness to travel. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs.
Preferred: Committed to current best practices and is a member of at least one major professional association, including but not limited to; AACRAO, NACAC, College Board, NAFSA, etc., and is knowledgeable about territory management, tele-counseling, pre- and early college programs, in- and out-of-state residency policies, and community college partnerships including best practice transfer credit evaluation, reverse transfer and articulation agreements. Demonstrated skills related to database use, electronic workflow, and project management, collaboration tools, ERP, CRM, Image Now, People Soft, Target X, Sales Force, Zoom, Adobe and marketing. Demonstrated use of best practices in data integrity, importing/exporting, data fixes, modifications and writing queries. Able to strategically plan for the long-term with a holistic view of live and virtual events, social media, engagement, and communication across all channels including mail, telephone and SMS (text).
Requires scheduled routine evening and some weekend hours as well as flexible scheduling during peak recruitment times.
