The Multimedia Designer’s key responsibilities are:
Conceptualize and design captivating and rich experiences for the University’s print and digital publications.
Create vision, user experience, visual design, motion design, and asset production.
Support and enhance the University’s overall brand standards in both print and digital design environments.
Establish and maintain strategic relationships with various business partners.
Meet with clients to gather and/or clarify requirements. Perform requirements analysis to determine appropriate design solutions.
Partner with clients to compile and organize assets associated with projects.
Successfully interpret and extend existing design directions with minimal oversight
Understand and work within project parameters: client goals and requirements, internal goals, usability, technical constraints, as well as budget and schedule
Manage multiple projects, set and meet critical deadlines within the design and execution process.
Experiment with new tools and techniques to enhance UI and UX, improve workflow and quality of projects.
Collaborate and work effectively with colleagues in the Division of Marketing and Communications and inspire them to produce inventive, thoughtful, and relevant work for clients.
Assist with developing design-related processes and best practices for the division’s design team.
Research current and upcoming design trends, web technologies, social media, educational, and cultural trends.
Ensure delivery of quality design and follow best practices for accessibility, usability, and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
RIT’s Marketing and Communications Division (M&C) is the provider of integrated marketing and communications assets for the university. The University Creative Services Team within M&C provides design and written communications across all media for materials we create for our university partners.
Required Minimum Qualifications
It is imperative that the individual in this position be highly creative, self-motivated and have strong personal organization skills. She/he will need to be able to work on their own and collaboratively with other designers, writers, and web developers as required. The individual needs to have dynamic communication and presentation skills to be able to communicate effectively with customers who have varying understanding of brand strategy. He/she will need to be flexible and patient under tight deadlines. It is critical that the individual in this position be able to understand problems from a business perspective and utilize appropriate design and visual communication skills to provide a solution. She/he must have a passion for emerging technologies and trends and hunger to innovate. The individual should be able to identify opportunities to make best practice improvements to inefficient design solutions or outdated practices using new technologies, techniques, and innovative design approaches. He/she will need to be an analyzer, creator, and problem solver.
4-6 years experience in design, preferably with a marketing slant
Strong online portfolio that represents a range of design styles, diversity of projects, and a clear personal aesthetic demonstrating well-executed work in ad design, publication layout, desktop and mobile website design, brand identity, and all variety of marketing collateral
3-5 years of experience leveraging standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite
Experience with motion-based design techniques
Experience working with customers to determine and analyze requirements and appropriate design solutions;
Strong point of view on creative ideas and ability to promote conceptual thinking among team
Practical experience with Brand & Identity, and adhering to established design standards and guidelines restraints
Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud products including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, and Lightroom.
Strong commitment to creating innovative, interactive, and brand-appropriate experiences following established design principles and current trends in design.
Demonstrated experience utilizing color, space, typography, and visual communication skills.
Strong time management skills with the ability to work on multiple projects with varying timelines from inception, prototype, to completion.
Good communication skills (written and oral) to present design ideas/concepts in an appropriate manner that can be understood by business partners, technical staff, and end users.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience of user-centered design, web usability principles including mobile, information architecture, principles of graphic user interface (GUI) design, capabilities of different platforms/browsers, design constraints on the web.
Strong attention to detail.
Ability to document interactivity and animation concepts through wireframes, storyboards, flowcharts, screenshots and demos to show various states of user interactivity.
Understanding of file optimization for web and other media.
Good understanding of cross-browser compatibility and browser degradation strategies.
Hands on experience with motion graphics utilizing current motion based design applications or techniques.
Capable of supporting all design and maintenance activities (print, web, social media, etc.).
Ability to work individually or collaboratively with other team members.
Self-initiative to accomplish an objective given general guidance without requiring detailed managerial oversight.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Candidate must be a self-motivated and highly organized individual.
Knowledge of responsive design capabilities and techniques
Required Minimum Education Level
Bachelors or Equivalent Experience
Hands on experience with content management systems such as Drupal or Wordpress
Previous work experience in an academic environment desirable
Experience with mobile web design and development
Possess a passion for internet technology, social media, and culture
Demonstrated experience designing and developing for HTML email
Intermediate knowledge of search engine optimization techniques
Familiarity with IT security policies and procedures a plus
