Studio Manager Position at Mesa Arts Center
Mesa Arts Center, the largest multidisciplinary arts center in the Southwest U.S., has an opening for an important creative and administrative management position in its Engagement and Education programs. The Studio Manager will lead the extensive creative practice classes and engagement of studio programs of Mesa Arts Center, which has 14 studios and offers roughly 1,000 classes/workshops in ceramics, glass, painting/drawing, printmaking, jewelry, sculpture, photography, dance, drama and music each year.
Responsibilities: The Studio Manager (Arts Education Program Coordinator – Arts Classes Assignment) is responsible for the implementation of programs and initiatives related to the Mesa Arts Center (MAC) studio arts education program, including, but not limited to, program planning, development, delivery, analysis, budgeting, database management, interaction/collaboration with engagement staff, teachers, and volunteers; and the hiring, training, evaluation, and supervision of studio program staff and teachers. The position acts as a liaison to other units within the Arts and Culture Department, other City departments, and outside agencies as appropriate, for the purpose of implementing and executing collaborative educational programming. Work requires the exercise of considerable initiative and independent judgment and performs related duties as required.
The Studio Manager is responsible for all activities and tasks related to the planning, delivery, and evaluation of studio arts education classes at the Mesa Arts Center, including adult, youth, intergenerational, performing, visual, summer arts camps and other camps, workshops, and demonstrations. This position hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates the full time and part-time Arts Education Specialists, contract teachers, and assistants, and trains/supervises volunteers; develops, manages, and meets all studio arts class program expenditure and revenue goals; participates in the development of registration policies and procedures; works closely with the Box Office Supervisor to manage the class registration process, solve problems, and is responsible for providing the highest levels of quality customer service to students and patrons; works closely with the Marketing and Public Relations staff to appropriately publicize the program and produce class information on the MAC website and in printed materials; works with Event Services staff to generate studios rental revenue; coordinates studio and equipment maintenance, repair, and equipment replacement and creation and implementation of safety procedures; and plans and presents educational demonstrations at MAC festivals and community events.
The Studio Manager is expected to create a strategic business plan for studio programs, to plan and implement program evaluation, to communicate regularly with the student body and build/maintain relationships with teachers and key stakeholders; and to assess student input/feedback, available data, competitive offerings and market conditions to develop and implement new class offerings, plan fee adjustments, identify targeted marketing and promotion opportunities, and generally lead and guide the growth and development of this vibrant and exciting program.
The Studio Manager’s work schedule is varied, and evening classes and some weekend events are included as a normal part of the schedule. Supervision is received from Director of Community-Engaged Practice who reviews work through observation, conferences, and results achieved. This class is FLSA exempt-administrative.
Characteristics/Skills: Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, to make public presentations as needed to promote the Studio Program and to prepare comprehensive and professional reports on plans and progress; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, and others and to listen well, and communicate effectively with employees and volunteers having varied educational backgrounds and values; knowledge of database management systems, arts mediums and disciplines, arts education training methods and design, and planning and organization of instructional programs; excellent organizational and project management skills: highly developed interpersonal skills to manage a wide variety of staff, instructors and volunteers; ability to manage and maintain statistics and evaluation tools; ability to interview, train and evaluate staff and instructors; skills needed to effectively collect needed data and evaluate program needs and outcomes; and desire, experience and skills to create, plan and implement interesting and innovative projects and arts outreach programs.
Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Arts Administration, or a related field. Considerable (3 - 5years) experience in arts education, museum education, or arts administration.
