The Director, under general direction, maintains responsibility for the overall managment and direction of ta department or major budge entity.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelorâ™s Degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience
Ten years of related experience in sport management, leadership, business, administration or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
Preferred Education and Experience:
Masterâ™s Degree in sport management, business, leadership, administration or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Fifteen years related experience in sport management, leadership, business or administration. Experience with large scale facility and Rec Sports program management.
National Intramural Recreational Sports Administration (NIRSA)
Registered Collegiate Recreational Sports Professional
Completion of NIRSA Management School Level I and Level II
Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong technical and communication skills, ability to manage and forecast multi-million dollar budget, and experience with Rec Sports construction projects.

25% Department Leadership: Establish and maintain the mission, vision and overall direction of the Department of Recreational Sports. Develop evaluation strategies and policies for ensuring that the department is delivering quality facilities, programs and services to the university community. Maintaining and implementing a detailed risk management program is of paramount importance. Specifically this includes the management of multiple indoor and outdoor facilities, as well as a variety of program areas such as outdoor adventures, aquatics, strength & conditioning, intramural sports, sports clubs, and fitness/wellness programs. Serve as the liaison to Sterling Golf, the management company responsible for operating the Texas A&M University Golf Course.
30% Supervision: Direct the efforts of and globally supervise 33 full-time staff, 9 graduate assistants and 1,100 student workers. Directly supervise and evaluate one Senior Associate Director, Associate and/or Assistant Directors, and one Senior Administrative Coordinator.
5% Organization Structure: Develop the organizational structure to provide continued effective operations of the department. Devise and implement short- and long-term staffing plans, oversee departmental hiring, and implement job search policies to encourage the development of a diverse, high-functioning staff. Approve all decisions related to hiring full-time staff. Ensure that appropriate human resources policies and university procedures are being followed.
12% Budgeting: Administer a budget of $16.5M to include four major operating accounts. Set fund raising and sponsorship goals and identify alternative funding sources to enhance programs and services. Represent the department at all budget meetings to include Student Affairs Fee Advisory Board, Division of Student Affairs mid-year budget, and Rec Sports budget reviews. Develop and maintain long-range budget forecasts for all departmental accounts and establish plans for ensuring financial solvency.
5% Public Relations: Develop, facilitate and promote effective collaborative relationships among faculty, staff and students. Understand the important role Rec Sports plays with academics, support units, campus partners, community groups and professional associations. Conduct tours and public relations activities with campus visitors. Attend local, state and national workshops and conferences. Host and present at various recreational sports workshops.
8% Collaboration: Consult and advise with the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and other university leaders regarding issues, needs and concerns regarding recreational sports programs and services as they relate to students, faculty, staff and other affiliated constituents. Interact with other Directors in Student Affairs. Serve on departmental, division, university, and system committees as appropriate.
5% Strategic Planning: Direct the staff in strategic planning and goal setting to ensure that all program areas are effectively developing long range plans that support the departmentâ™s and divisionâ™s overall strategic plans. Ensure the continuance of quality programs and facilities and enhance the development of new programs and services to meet the future needs of recreational sports users. Develop, direct and evaluate process, compliance, and internal controls.
5% Assessment: Develop and direct research and assessment efforts regarding student learning and customer satisfaction for Rec Sports programs and services to be used in producing an annual report. Demonstrate the importance of Rec Sports to student recruitment and retention efforts.
