The Associate Director, with responsibilities for directing the English Language Learning Program is a professional position within the Office for International Programs. This individual provides leadership for all programs housed within the English Language Learning Program (ELLP) including Intensive English, conditional admissions, and special programs. The Associate Director provides programmatic and administrative leadership, including oversight of personnel, recruitment, program management, student services, curriculum development, assessment, and strategic planning for the unit. As a staff member in a multi-function office, this position reports to the Executive Director of the Office for International Programs. Management: In collaboration with Director, manages ELLP personnel including staff selection, training, performance evaluations & professional development; Observes and mentors new instructors for the purposes of retention and development.
Program Assessment: Responsible for the ongoing assessment and enhancement of the ELLP academic program, including curricular design and academic-focused programming. Analyzes course, instructor, and program evaluations; Develops and evaluates instructional approaches and procedures, and communicates them to teaching staff; Teaches ESL classes periodically as needed.
Program Administration: Responsible for the overall administration of the ELLP program; Reviews and makes decisions regarding final student placements and advancement; Plans and manages program budget; Oversees disciplinary matters and academic probation cases; Reviews and develops ELLP policies and procedures.
Program Expansion: In collaboration with the Director, actively identifies opportunities to expand and enhance the ELLP program; Facilitates accreditation processes and self-studies; Identifies and applies for grant opportunities to support program expansion and enhance current offerings; Monitors enrollment management functions.
Recruitment: Responsible for ELLP marketing and recruitment efforts, ensuring that strategic recruitment and retention goals are met: Analyzes potential recruitment opportunities and collaborates with Executive Director to develop, implement, and assess a diversified recruitment strategy for the unit; Liaises with sponsoring organizations (e.g. SACM), government agencies, and embassies to identify and enroll international students into ELLP programs. Works with these partners to resolve student issues as they arise.; travels in order to promote of ELLP program options to various constituencies, including international recruitment travel and attendance at national conferences; Represents ELLP to other programs and departments in the University and outside of the University. In consultation with the Executive Director, Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate and Professional Enrollment Management, and individual Colleges and Schools, develops, implements, and expands conditional admissions program as appropriate; Actively identifies opportunities for customized program development. Negotiates, develops, and manages short term, customized programs, with a particular focus on externally funded grants and projects as well as opportunities with University partner institutions abroad; Oversees the development of marketing materials in support of recruitment, including print, social media, and website.
As part of the OIP leadership team, actively participates in Offices’ strategic planning, assessment, and reporting as well as the planning and administration of OIP activities.
Performs other duties as required.
Master’s degree in TESOL, applied linguistics, or closely-related field; minimum of five years of directly related recruitment, academic, administrative, and supervisory experience in English as a Second Language program administration; extensive experience with ELS assessment and curriculum development as well as instruction at a university-based Intensive English Program; Demonstrated ability to build, maintain and strengthen organizational capacity; Strategic planning, project management and risk management ability; Strong interpersonal, public relations and communication skills; Facility with current technologies, including student management systems; International experience and demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism.
Preferred qualifications: Professional experience teaching overseas, and/or working or studying internationally; competency in, or advanced study of, at least one language other than English.
