The University of Akron’s Williams Honor College is seeking applications for the Assistant Director, eSports Programs.
Assist the Director/Head Coach of the esports program by providing additional oversight and management in designated areas of both varsity team and club programs. Assist in maintaining the daily operations of the UA esports facilities. Work with student participants, coaches and other leaders in varsity and club programs. Work with the director and others in the university and broader community to integrate the esports experience into the academic experience and entrepreneurial culture of UA. Assist in recruitment of esports student athletes and fundraising for scholarships and program expenses.
Assist with overseeing and coordinating our esports teams and club programs, including practices and matches. Assist with developing team and individual skills to prepare athletes and the team for success. Resolve conflicts between players and motivate players to improve. May supervise student coaches.
Partner with UA Admissions staff to recruit and retain highly skilled players by initiating off-campus activities (including, but not limited to, esports summer camps for high school students, social media campaigns, and other marketing). Coordinate the search and evaluation process for all prospective esports student athletes. Work with the Financial Aid office to manage and allocate scholarships.
Assist with coordination of fundraising and sponsorship initiatives for the esports program that aligns with the University's overall fundraising strategy. Assist with marketing and promotional activities. Collaborate with campus departments and external sources to facilitate program improvements, academic integration, and promote community involvement.
Assist in maintaining and monitoring esports equipment and facilities. Assist in ensuring institutional compliance with various governing bodies for the esports program. Stay up to date on cutting-edge equipment and playing techniques for all esports games that the UA team is engaging in to ensure excellent coaching and strategizing.
Perform various administrative duties including making travel arrangements, monitoring the departmental budget and purchasing necessary supplies and equipment. Maintain necessary records and receipts. Other duties as assigned.
Assist in monitoring and promoting (i) the health and safety of athletes and staff; (ii) the academic progress of student athletes to support players' success in the classroom; and (iii) the educational goals of individual student athletes.
Bachelor's Degree and a valid Driver's License with a minimum of one (1) year of competitive esports experience involving multiplayer online video games that have team-based elements.
Ability to organize, work in a team environment, motivate and manage a college esports varsity team and club program.
Must have excellent understanding of the rules and intricacies of the most widely played competitive games in the esports field, and the ability to play the game at a reasonable level sufficient to coach student athletes. Familiarity with team-based multiplayer games such as League of Legends, Hearthstone, and others is required.
Desired experience in teaching, analyzing players, identifying strengths and weaknesses of players and developing strategies for competitive esports at the collegiate level. Firm commitment to a student-centered culture and the academic success of students.
Experience managing people and budgets required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
Ideal candidate will be able to assist with student-player recruitment, acquisition of sponsorships, and fundraising.
Strong motivational skills, public relations skills and marketing capabilities are required.
Previous experience working in esports is preferred.
Experience maintaining both software and hardware equipment associated with esports preferred.
