The Gulf of Mexico Alliance (GOMA) is a partnership of the five Gulf States. The partnership supports a broad network of state and federal agencies, academic organizations, businesses, and other non-profits in the Gulf Coast region who routinely collaborate on issues that are a priority for the environmental and economic health of the Gulf of Mexico.
1 – Gulf Star Program – GOMA’s Gulf Star program is a public-private partnership that supports GOMA Team projects. Currently, approximately $600,000 per year of funding is needed from the private sector to support the program.
2 – Annual Event Sponsorships – GOMA hosts an “All Hands” meeting each year and needs approximately $50,000 in corporate sponsorships to support the meeting costs.
3 – Year of the Gulf 2020 Campaign – GOMA is sponsoring an awareness campaign in the year 2020 to include a gala/cocktail reception, assisting with smaller Gulf-state events, a region-wide recipe book, and various marketing assistance with partners. A one-time effort of approximately $500,000 is needed to support the campaign.
The Development Director will develop and implement a fundraising strategy that expands the Alliance’s private funding base and complements the Gulf of Mexico Alliance’s business plan. The strategy should target the national level as well as the Gulf region where the Alliance is located.
Specifically, the fundraising strategy should include continuing existing and building new relationships with individuals, private and public foundations, and potential corporate sponsors. This includes researching and writing efforts associated with foundations and cultivation of corporate sponsorships. Also, advising on communication of programmatic outcomes that convey positive stories of our work to potential donors and the public.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Understand and effectively communicate GOMA’s history, mission, impact and goals to donors and prospective donors, partners, and funders.
Work with Executive Director to develop a strategic direction for development nationally and regionally where GOMA’s community is located that aims to consistently increase and diversify revenue.
Craft, lead, and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy that complements GOMA’s business plans.
Continue our existing and build new relationships with individuals, foundations, major donors, and corporations via email, phone and face to face visits as feasible.
Research new funding prospects and leverage foundation and corporate grant opportunities.
Work with the Year of the Gulf campaign steering committee to spearhead the execution of the campaign implementation plan and the associated events.
Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills Required:
Proven leadership skills for fundraising efforts – minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in non-profit development and fundraising, with demonstrated success in raising $500,000 + annually.
Extensive background in fund development, grant research and writing, marketing and public relations.
Proven ability at giving compelling presentations to various audiences.
Belief in the concept of collaboration and a passion to build the capacity of communities to be resilient by protecting our water resources, conserving Gulf habitats, and increasing the health of Gulf wildlife and fisheries.
Highly motivated self-starter with excellent organizational and time management skills; focused, detail-oriented; ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple demands and deadlines amidst changing program and organizational priorities; creative and entrepreneurial thinker.
Ability to work fluidly within a virtual project team that includes being comfortable on webinar-based meetings, video conferencing, and using virtual collaborative tools such as Google Docs, GoToMeeting, Adobe Connect, and Dropbox.
Exceptional relationship-building skills and ability to easily connect and engage with people; strong phone verbal and written communication skills.
Superior writing skills. Other writing or marketing experience (i.e. journalism or public relations) a plus.
High degree of professionalism and discretion, and high standards for excellence in execution.
Telecommuting is allowed.
Additional Salary Information: Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
