The Newsroom Coordinator provides support for media relations staff: maintains and updates media databases, helping identify key reporters for each member of the media relations staff; distributes news releases; leads yearly media analysis project; writes briefs for honor roll and occasional news stories; posts and edits stories through the content management system; maintains timely placement of stories on the Northwestern Now web pages; prepares daily summary of news coverage; supervises work-study students; and assists internal communications editor, AVP of media relations and director of media relations in management of content and distribution of news internally and externally.
Please Note: Occasionally has to work late on a weeknight or work on a weekend day, depending on news needs.
Web publishing: Uses content management system to publish news content online, using various CMS features to maximize readability. Assists AVP of media relations, director of media relations and internal communications editor, with news dissemination responsibilities.
Manages media databases and distribution of news releases.
Writing assignments: Writes briefs and occasional news features and assists media relations staff in management of content for web and publications.
Prepares daily summary of news coverage: Assists the AVP of media relations and the director of media relations in preparing summary for distribution to internal audiences.
Leads a yearly media analysis project, supervising students in compiling a detailed report on news coverage of Northwestern and peer universities.
Supervises up to five work-study students.
Performs other duties and assignments as identified by the AVP of media relations and the director of media relations.
Other duties as assigned.
A bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications or the equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Basic journalism skills, basic writing and computer skills, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
Entry-level experience in journalism or public relations, keen awareness of current affairs and news, demonstrated strong writing and editing experience
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Knowledge of Macintosh programs
Knowledge of CMS systems skills.
Experience with data and analytics.
