The College of Human Ecology has over 100 years of academic excellence and community outreach woven into its history, fusing a respect for tradition with a spirit of innovation. The College’s mission is to advance and improve the human experience by integrating academics, research and outreach in the areas of nutrition and health, design and technology, human development, and public policy. We house state of the art research facilities, and are the hub for Cornell University’s research and academics in family, health, social and consumer policy. Human Ecology’s multidisciplinary units provide a distinct research and learning environment; one that fosters collaboration across Cornell’s academic units, contributes to its substantive strengths in design, social and natural sciences and addresses the critical human challenges of the 21st century.
The Alumni Affairs and Development (AAD) unit is a collaborative team of individuals who engage alumni, parents and friends of the College of Human Ecology (CHE) with the goal of building connections to the College and University as well as increasing funding for College priorities and programs. The Associate Director reports to the Assistant Dean of Alumni Affairs and Development. The ideal candidate is a skilled relationship builder, results-oriented, creative and enthusiastic, while being extremely collaborative, organized and strategic. Key responsibilities include:
Prospect Management: Manage a portfolio of up to 100 alumni, parents and friends with the goal of cultivating, soliciting and stewarding annual and multi-year commitments to the College of Human Ecology. The donor prospects in the portfolio will have demonstrated capacity to give at the Major Gifts level ($250K or greater) or be capable to do so in the future with appropriate cultivation.
Program Support and Engagement: The Associate Director will work on critical project initiatives and will provide project management and oversight to various program fundraising initiatives as assigned by the Assistant Dean. Provide meaningful alumni engagement opportunities to Major Gift prospects to help foster growth in financial support for the College. Engagement opportunities will include targeted events, alumni-student mentoring, class lectures, virtual networking, etc.
Strategic Partner: The Associate Director will translate the strategic priorities of the Dean/College into fundraising outcomes which will result in meeting campaign and overall goals. Serves as a resource to other gift officers in helping develop strategies for prospect engagement.
The Associate Director is expected to travel to interact with constituents and prospects, as well as to staff events and other college and university activities.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent and 3 or more years’ experience in one or more of the following areas: development, fundraising, donor relations, alumni relations, public relations, marketing/communications or related experience or equivalent.
Collaborative, energetic, self-motivated, and engaging professional with strong multi-tasking skills and sound judgment who can effectively and diplomatically work with alumni and donors, colleagues, members of the faculty, high-level administrators, volunteer leaders, and other constituents.
Superior verbal and written communications skills; effective organizational skills and strong detail orientation; the ability to speak and present credibly about higher education and the goals and mission of Cornell and the College of Human Ecology.
A high degree of customer service orientation, personal motivation and commitment to values that support Cornell’s mission to foster initiative, integrity, and excellence in an environment of collegiality, civility and responsible stewardship.
Ability to work in a system that emphasizes measurable objectives, including mutually agreed upon targets for fundraising goal. Results oriented.
Must be able to work in fast-paced, demanding environment while using sound judgment in decision making and in accomplishing tasks that are urgent or of a sensitive or confidential nature while meeting competing deadlines.
Must be able and willing to work occasional weekends, evenings, and to travel extensively on behalf of Cornell.
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
Prior experience in higher education or similar environment helpful.
