The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) Special Assistant to the President supports a broad range of projects on behalf of the Office of the President. The special assistant to the president for communications and research will work directly with the president of the University, assisting with the preparation of speeches, reports, presentations, videos, statements, articles, correspondence, and other materials.
1.Assist the President in preparing speeches, introductions, letters and other written material which would include research on the topics, rigorous fact checking, writing, editing and consultation with other offices and individuals both in and outside the University;
2.Manage deadlines and project flow for Presidential communications in consultation with the Chief of Staff including setting internal deadlines as necessary and working with colleagues in Government Relations, and Communications to see written projects through to completion;
3.Assist the President with developing drafts for position papers and op eds. working in conjunction with the Associate Vice President for Government Relations and University Communication leadership, conducting research as needed, including completing rigorous fact checking;
4.Assist the President in developing a communications plan for contact with alumni and implementing it including drafting written communications and organizing phone conversations. Serve as the primary contact with Development and Alumni Relations for these communications;
5.Manage all aspects of digital communications with a variety of communications channels (mobile, social, video, online, interactive media) for the President's office and serve as the primary person handling the President's social media to include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. and be responsible for these on a regular basis;
6.Manage the website for the Office of the President including posting content of speeches, President's pages and statements and updating links to relevant stories and media posts, manage the blog including drafting material at regular intervals and after each event;
7.Establish appropriate protocol and ensure adherence to protocol for all special events that include the President; Coordinate arrangements for visiting dignitaries. Plan and execute detailed programs for foreign leaders and delegations visiting and meeting with the executive team including organizing MOU signing ceremonies.
8.Ensure the accuracy of all facts and details in speeches, statements and quotes issued on behalf of the President and official statements on behalf of the President's Office; collaborate proactively and effectively with University Communication and other parties inside and outside the University related to the President's written or spoken words, photos and videos, social media and events;
9.Coordinate, attend and as appropriate staff social events hosted by the president and/or President's spouse, in consultation with the Chief of Staff to help establish relationships and good communications with the university’s many diverse constituencies. This could include events off campus and outside DFW in which case the individual would serve as the chief protocol/communications person on trips if needed
Bachelor's degree and 7+ years of relevant experience
Superb writing capabilities, including an ability to write quickly, persuasively, clearly and in the president’s style on a wide variety of subjects related to the University and higher education, at times on tight or unexpected deadlines
Demonstrated aptitude for understanding complex issues and the ability to translate and simplify them for key audiences
Ability and willingness to meet the president’s expectations for written style and content and to accept and respond to revisions and advice rapidly and effectively
High level of integrity, trustworthiness, and respect
Flexibility and adaptability, including a willingness to undertake both mundane and high-profile tasks with enthusiasm and energy
Strong research skills and a demonstrated ability to attend carefully to both grammatical and factual details
Ability to take initiative and work independently
Work discreetly on sensitive or delicate assignments, exercise sound editorial judgement
Exceptional organizational skills and proven ability to keep track of and meet numerous deadlines; ability to handle multiple tasks in a timely manner and effectively re-prioritize responsibilities
High level of discretion and excellent judgment; ability to work with and manage confidential information
Demonstrated ability to handle social media
Master's degree in a relevant discipline
Progressive experience in supporting executive level positions
Experience at, or extensive familiarity with, institutions of higher education strongly preferred
Experience as a successful writer, in a journalistic, speechwriting, academic, or other context
