The Director of Advancement will staff and support the Departments of Family and Preventive Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology, building a robust dynamic of philanthropic support by engaging and involving leadership and their teams in those departments. Essential to the success of the programs and the impact it makes, the Director will be developing philanthropic support from donor partners that will include individuals, patients and their families, and corporate, foundation, and other interested and aligned funding sources. The Director will develop, articulate and execute a unique advancement plan for each department, focused on best practices including goals and metrics, and well-articulated philanthropic priorities, leading to the procurement of private support for mission aligned activities. The Director will report to the chair of each department as well as the Deputy Chief Philanthropy Officer (DCPO) in the Office of Advancement.

The DOA is primarily charged to work with department faculty and staff and the Deputy Chief Philanthropy officer to identify potential donor partners, help initiate contact, facilitate the support for projects that are of interest to both donor partners and departments, work to maintain and grow relationships with donor partners, and seek individual donations to support department activities in line with a well- articulated advancement plan. The majority of the DOA’s time is focused on activities that will lead to support from donor partners.
Manage a portfolio of 75-100 major gift prospects capable of making gifts of $25,000 or above.
Maintain activities consistent with the advancement plan for each department that include 80-100 or more face to face visits that are conducted in accordance with the Office of Advancement’s guidelines and standards. Identify potential donor partners. Develop and implement a strategy for engaging top potential donor partners.
Identify prospects. Develop and implement a solicitation strategy for the top 25 prospects. In addition, conduct 25 qualification contacts each year. Be instrumental in obtaining investment by donor partners to meet support goals set by each sponsoring department and the DCP0.
Solicit a minimum of 12-15 major gifts each year.
Partners with the Office of Advancement and the directors of foundation relations, annual giving, advancement services, planned giving, communications, and stewardship to support the development and implementation of a robust and well-articulated advancement program for each sponsoring department.
Prepare written proposals, informational materials, endowment agreements, gift illustrations and other materials needed to secure donor support. Participate cooperatively in the University’s prospect management and tracking system.
Meet with department faculty regularly at a frequency negotiated with each sponsoring department with clear objectives that are aligned with the advancement plan for each department.
Work with the DCPO and other advancement colleagues to develop individual and annual support strategies to identify, qualify and engage relationships and move them through the donor commitment continuum to realized donor support.
Coordinate the participation of administrators, academic leaders, volunteers and advancement staff in building donor support.
In consultation with the chairs and DCPO, submit an annual advancement plan and budget that includes goals, objectives and strategies for obtaining donor support. Participate in evaluating progress toward goals.
Work cooperatively with staff in the Office of Advancement for University of Utah Health and with the University Central Development office in preparing strategies for engaging donors in line with institutional policies and priorities.
May plan, assign and review the work of support staff. Responsibilities require considerable professional independence, personal initiative, and the ability to effectively and quickly respond to a variety of situations involving Health Science and University constituencies.
Seek appropriate training opportunities, including training necessary for proficiency in the use of gift planning techniques and partner with the Director of Planned Giving to build that program.
Provide training on how to develop donor support for advancement staff, academic leaders and volunteers.
Submit regular reports to the DCPO and department chairs, and other institutional leaders as required.
Work with the Director of Stewardship to ensure endowment reports are completed on time; research any questions related to the reports.
Also responsible for other duties assigned by the DCPO and the department chairs.
Relationship development and management will be a key requirement of the position, and helping to build a culture of collaboration and community.
This position may provide supervision as delegated by the DCPO and the department chairs according to work priorities and within a team framework.
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Communication, Public Relations, English, or a related field, or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education).
Five years’ experience in fundraising, marketing, sales, business, public relations, annual, corporate or foundation giving which includes two years of budgeting and supervisory experience.
Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Experience in grant or proposal writing, public speaking, a background working with print and/or electronic media, an understanding of university fundraising practices and personnel management is preferred.
At least five years of progressively responsible experience in institutional development/advancement, preferably in academic health sciences, with an emphasis on engaging donor partners and securing related funding. Equivalent development/advancement experience outside of higher education may substitute for educational institution experience.
Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with donor partners and supporters to build and maintain lifelong partnerships and being trustworthy while aligning donors’ interests with the priority efforts of the institution.
