Creative Services and Publications (CSP) is a department within University Communications and Public Affairs (UCPA) at UC San Diego. Each year, CSP produces hundreds of communication pieces on behalf of UC San Diego. Creative services include comprehensive web and new media work, the full range of traditional print design and publishing, art direction, brand development, copy writing and editing, photography, video production, project consultation and management, and strategic marketing. Creative Services and Publications also operates Studio Ten 300, a state-of-the-art broadcast studio that links UC San Diego's world-class faculty to media organizations. The executive director of CSP manages the department and plays a key leadership role in the development and implementation of campus communication initiatives, brand, and graphic guidelines. The office produces communication and marketing pieces for the campus at large as well as for its individual schools, divisions, departments, and support units.
Under direction, the Senior Artist develops and produces original graphic designs for a wide range of official UC San Diego publications, both printed and electronic. Produces print and web design, including all facets of electronic publishing, from concept through production, pre-press, and printing. Manages all technical aspects of offset and digital printing processes for his/her projects. Projects range from one- to complex multicolor publications, including but not limited to, for print: annual reports, booklets, brochures, posters, print ads, graphic identity programs, and illustrations. The Senior Artist designs dynamic web pages and electronic newsletters for UC San Diego clients, including assisting in the navigation of web architecture and application of current technical usability web standards. Produces creative graphic solutions that reflect the prescribed graphic standards of the university. Demonstrates strong design and technical skills; a commitment to customer service; experience in working independently and collaboratively with a diverse group of artists, coordination staff, vendors, and clients; and sound organizational and detail-oriented skills in a high-volume publications unit.

Demonstrated experience in providing graphic solutions to design problems/ projects appropriate to audience/ budget/ timeframe requirements. Related ability to apply appropriate marketing concepts to design development.
Thorough knowledge of the printing process and related production activities, including file preparation and output, prepress, and printing.
Demonstrated experience in producing publications electronically from concept, through production, to oversight of proofs and printing.
Knowledge of web design principals and demonstrated ability to manipulate graphics for appropriate incorporation into websites. Related skill to apply, and translate effectively, print approaches to the Internet environment.
Experience designing within an existing, and evolving, brand system.
One or two years full-time experience in graphic design.
Bachelor's degree in Design or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
Advanced technical skill and knowledge to utilize Macintosh hardware and related publishing software such as Adobe Creative Cloud (e.g., InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver) and Microsoft Office, to execute complex print and digital designs.
Ability and willingness to learn new techniques in electronic media and Web publishing.
Ability to art direct photographers, illustrators, and production artists.
Knowledge of and skill to navigate effectively and download/ upload images from/ to the Internet and related networks.
Ability to organize projects and workflow to produce publications in a fast-paced, deadline-driven working environment. Ability to complete design requirements within project budget/cost limitations.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and follow direction/ input from supervisory/ editorial/support staff members and clients to complete projects as prescribed.
