Conditions of Employment This is a full time, temporary, exempt position. Reporting to the Director of Creative Services, with additional lead work direction from other members of the Advancement leadership team, the Multimedia Journalist is responsible for combining text, images, sounds, videos and graphics to help craft strategic communications on behalf of the university, its schools and students, faculty and staff. (I think this sentence should be deleted because it is essentially already covered in other verbiage) The work involves daily contact with university management, members of the media and other key constituencies to ensure that the public receives relevant, timely, and positive information about the university and its programs.
Working independently under general supervision, the incumbent is responsible for supporting a broad range of projects involving the execution of public affairs, media relations, publications and marketing. Major duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following: - serving as a media contact and is accountable for writing, editing, proofreading copy; - advising university management and faculty on public affairs policies and practices; - serving as an internal liaison for campus programs and coordinating and participating in key events to ensure proper coverage; - promoting and publicizing institutional activities and programs to the media; - identifying potentially newsworthy topics and recommending avenues for dissemination; - determining strategic placement of information in the media; - assisting in the coordination of media briefings; - crafting story content and layout; - coordinating and performing , photography and videography in support of communications projects; - participating in ongoing management of campus news website; - developing strategies to promote the university by using market research data to determine most effective techniques and approaches for reaching targeted audiences; - supervising student assistants on communications projects.
Performs other secondary duties as assigned.
Duties take place mostly in an office setting located at Sonoma State University. The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday aligned with regular campus hours. As an exempt employee you have some flexibility in your schedule however must be available during the regular campus hours Monday through Friday to meet the operational needs of the campus and department. Your specific start time is determined by your Appropriate Administrator. Evening and weekend hours may be required and will be specified only by the supervisor to meet operational needs. The incumbent must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as is determined by the Appropriate Administrator.
Qualifications This position requires working knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and two to three years of related professional or technical experience. Demonstrate working knowledge of marketing, media and public relations; exceptional interviewing skills, including strong verbal and writing skills with a solid foundation in grammar and spelling; ability to analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles and apply standard theories, practices and principles and techniques related to communications. Knowledge of and experience with analytics and video production desired. Requires solid computer skills, including intermediate skills on a Macintosh platform in Microsoft Office, Creative Cloud suite, Dreamweaver or HTML, and various social media venues and ability to use a variety of software for demographic analysis and surveys. Graphic design experience (such as PhotoShop and InDesign) desired.
In addition to the above qualifications, work assignments typically require the following: thorough knowledge of and ability to use effectively media outlets including planning media coverage and media publicity campaigns for the university and events; ability to build and manage more sophisticated media contacts; demonstrated ability to keep abreast of campus events and subject matter expertise in relation to current events to identify and capitalize on media opportunities that will promote the university and increase positive media coverage; working knowledge of copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications and the media; thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles and formats; ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals; ability to analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles; strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills; knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages; working knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods; ability to apply market research to identify communication needs and target audiences; ability to handle sensitive and confidential information; exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening and interpretive skills and the ability to provide lead work direction to student personnel as directed by the Director of Creative Services and the AVP for Strategic Communications.
Must have the ability to effectively communicate with all levels within the university and establish and maintain productive and effective, inclusive working relationships amongst diverse populations including staff, faculty, administration, students, and other internal and external constituents. Must be able to accept constructive feedback and work cooperatively in group situations.
