The Fisher Center for Business Analytics characterizes the creation of business value from data science. The Center pursues its vision through research, education, and accelerating the diffusion and adoption of analytics throughout all aspects of business and management. The Mission of the Center is to: a) Educate current and future leaders to innovate through analytics; b) Engage the full breadth of UC Berkeley’s data science expertise in interdisciplinary research applying data analytics to business, and c) Accelerate the diffusion of best practices derived from industry and research
The Executive Director of the Center manages the daily operations of the Center and has a proven record in research management and administration, partnership development, and staff management. This is a senior-level position that works directly with a network of leading academics and business leaders in the application of data science and analytics to business strategy. As the Center is in a growth phase, there is scope for the Executive Director to play an important role in shaping both the direction and operations of a Center that promises to become a respected and influential bridge between the academic and industrial foundations of data science, and the practical needs of business.Involves managing a significant, independent academic or research program. Formulates program strategies and goals. Plans, directs and controls program budget and other related resources.
Independently oversees a moderately sized academic or research program and represents the program to outside organizations. Oversees all administrative operations, finance, human resources and facilities for program. Designs and develops major program components, and administers the full range of the program's operational requirements. Designs and directs administrative and operational policies in consultation with the Center’s leadership. Is a resource on funding, staffing, research management, and administration to affiliated faculty. Hires, mentors and supervises support staff and students.. Develops and executes a plan with the Center’s leadership to position the Center as a multi-sided platform between industry and academia around the development and application of data science to business. Within the campus data science ecosystem, positions the Center as the locus of research applying data science to business policy. To industry, positions the Center as the resource for matching faculty and PhD research expertise with real-world data and business problems. Provides leadership for the Center to develop strategic recommendations and execute approved plans for the Center’s development and growth. Identifies and secures data resources and funding for the Center’s work .Develops and organizes conferences and other public forums. Responsible for recruiting and retaining industry leaders to partner with research program in achievement of center goals. Develops and manages a membership program for industry partners. Makes and builds relationships with key partners within the UC Berkeley data science ecosystem as well as private sector and non-profit organizations seeking to leverage data for business value. Plans and executes a strategy for disseminating the Center’s work and assists in disseminating faculty research findings to the research and business communities. This includes an annual conference highlighting industry-academic research and a monthly seminar series inviting industry researchers to campus. •Directs and administers an independent program with complete administrative and programmatic responsibility. •Facilitates efforts of various departments, managers and outside constituencies to ensure interdisciplinary collaboration. •Develops and maintains liaisons with industry and academia to position the Center as a bridge between the academic and industrial foundations of data science, and the practical needs of business •Identifies and pursues funding opportunities and revenue streams. Identifies and secures funding and data resources for the Center’s work. •Ensures the development, implementation and adherence to policies regarding intellectual property in addition to negotiating and managing IP agreements and contracts. •Manages financial and HR resources. •Assesses program's effectiveness, and recommends changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly. •Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short term and long term planning. •Assists in developing research, participates in professional conferences, manages seminars and workshops and provides public relations support. Participates with faculty on research.•Academic background and experience in computer science, statistics, or computational social science (preferred), and strong understanding of business and data analytics. . •Experience in the entire industry-academic research pipeline, including the definition and negotiation of data use agreements, data preprocessing, and exploratory analysis. •Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices. •Advanced oral and written communication skills to build interest in Center’s research. •Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills. •Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with students and diverse groups to achieve results. •Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
