Under general supervision, the incumbent will extract, compile, analyze and report data on students, academic and co-curricular programs, personnel, and any other aspects of the university as requested. Responsibilities include querying large-scale institutional databases; troubleshooting and manipulating data; creating reports; filling cyclical and ad-hoc data requests and reporting requirements; designing and conducting analytical, research and evaluation studies including preparing interpretive analyses and presenting findings in narrative and graphic forms; and effectively interacting with the university community and external constituencies in carrying out these responsibilities. A strong customer service orientation is essential, as is the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, meet deadlines and accurately handle details. The ability to think in a logical, sequential manner is essential and may be demonstrated through experience such as computer programming; i.e., writing code, scripts, or syntax.
Surveys and Questionnaires
Complete federal, state, local, and institutional surveys and questionnaires, such as U.S. News and World Report, Petersons, College Board, IPEDS, etc. Ensure that data and information supplied in surveys and questionnaires are accurate, consistent, and timely. Maintain strong professional working relationships with campus academic and administrative offices, departments, and programs, as necessary to obtain needed data and information. Coordinate the completion and publication of the annual Common Data Set and maintain it on the university's web site.
Coordinate the university's cyclical participation in national surveys of students by identifying intended survey participants, distributing surveys, synthesizing delivered reports and conducting custom analyses and reports as necessary.
Develop and conduct surveys of students, employees, and other constituents to gather quantitative and qualitative information on topics such as satisfaction with services, impact of programs, etc. Analyze results and present them in a clear and concise manner to campus leaders.
Develop and deliver cyclical reports of student characteristics (academic, demographic, and socio-economic), and student achievement (GPA, units completed, retention, graduation, and time-to-degree).
Develop and implement reports to effectively and efficiently support enrollment management (student headcounts, unit load, and FTE) and academic affairs (e.g., majors, sections, degrees, faculty-student ratios, faculty workload).
Provide data and analytic support for the university and specific graduate departments in compliance with accreditation studies at the university and discipline level.
Provide data and analytic support for large scale, multi-year grants. Collaborate with grant project directors and external evaluators as appropriate.
Institutional Planning and Research Web and Portal Sites
On an on-going basis, ensure that the office web and portal sites up-to-date, web content is expanded as needed, and web format complies with campus design and technology standards. Collaborate with Public Relations and other campus offices to ensure that the office portal and web site content meets the campus's internal and external needs.
Training and Professional Development
Research and gain expertise on software products and report development methodologies, as assigned.
Strong understanding of relational database structures, theories, principles, and practices.
One or more of the following: Banner, PeopleSoft, or - preferably - Ellucian's Colleague, especially academic / student modules.
Good knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
Coursework or demonstrated experience in the use of statistics and relevant applications, research methodologies, and sound survey research practices.
Familiarity with common institutional research and effectiveness measures (e.g., retention, graduation rates, etc.) is preferred.
Familiarity with data visualization software (e.g., Tableau) is preferred.

Master's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in a social science field, with coursework in statistics and research methodology, or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge, abilities and skills.
Minimum of 2 years direct work experience.
Professional experience in a higher education setting preferred.
