Advertised Summary Job Description: The Office of Strategic Communications in the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, seeks a Senior Director of Digital Strategy.
As lead for the School's digital strategy to multiple audiences, the Senior Director determines ways in which to maximize Mailman's communications in digital formats including through the Mailman website and social media, strategic email messages, events and video that support others' promotion of the School brand. Collaborating with the School's Information Technology team, the senior director ensures that the website serves as a high-functioning hub for information about the School and effectively transmits the Mailman School's strategic objectives. The Senior Director manages internal staff and routinely monitors content for freshness, ease-of-navigation, accuracy, and evolving best practices for digital communications. The Senior Director reviews analytics and user feedback?devising appropriate responses to further optimize this digital platform while also ensuring that the School's editorial and digital style is preserved consistently.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Ensures that the website serves as a high-functioning, interactive and exciting hub for information about, and engagement with, the School. Conceives of and creates web pages, microsites, and systems to communicate with the School's multiple audiences including prospective students, current students, faculty, staff, the university at large, alumni, and public health stakeholders. Oversees web content (written articles, photography and video) contributed by other communications staff members, freelancers, training and management with outside vendors.
In concert with the Chief Communications Officer, guides the School's internal communications strategy through strategic use of email messages, the website, video and social media to promote strategic initiatives, communicate key leadership messages and share information. Partners with the office of the Dean, Development and Alumni Relations and others to shape and promote key school initiatives.
In collaboration with the Office of Admissions, devise and execute digitally-based marketing strategies and campaigns for student recruitment to meet enrollment targets and increase the quality of the applicant pool.
Collaborates with departments to inform editorial content decisions across the School in order to ensure that all digital properties reflect the School's strengths in a format that meets best practices. Helps departments to identify areas that require additional support or require revision.
Oversees maintenance and upgrades to the School's faculty database and events calendar, working internally with IT, Human Resources, faculty and departmental administrators and external vendors.
General Minimum Qualifications: Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus five years of related experience.
Peerless content development skills with experience writing and editing for the web.
Strong editorial and journalistic sensibility with intuitive understanding of a range of multimedia content, excellent design, and adherence to digital style guidelines.
Superb project management skills, including ability to communicate with all stakeholders, including IT and web tech professionals, academic leadership, and faculty.
Superior organizational and communication skills, ability to work collaboratively and creatively with departments.
Professional familiarity with academic environments.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: Required technical skills: Experience managing large CMS-structured Drupal websites, JIRA Project Management, Adobe Photoshop, HTML.
Also valuable: Full Adobe suite, Mailchimp, Audio and/or video editing.
Preferred Qualifications: Additional training in digital media, strategic communications, marketing, or related field preferred.
Minimum 7 years relevant experience preferred.
Knowledge of and interest in public health issues preferred.
