In collaboration with the Director of Government Relations, develops and advocates for APHA’s legislative agenda by representing the association at Capitol Hill meetings, coalition meetings, federal agency meetings and briefings. Monitors and influences congressional and regulatory activity on public health issues impacting APHA advocacy priorities and members.
Leads all activities related to the Friends of HRSA coalition including coordinating coalition activities in support of HRSA topline funding in the Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill. Develops letters, legislative updates, regulatory comments and testimony related to the association’s priority advocacy issues. Develops and implements strategies for APHA’s federal grassroots advocacy activities, including: engaging APHA grassroots and grasstops in advocacy, including during the summer Public Health Action (PHACT) Campaign, Capitol Hill visits, developing and writing action alerts and advocacy materials, managing APHA’s web-based advocacy web pages and online advocacy action alert page. Works with the Affiliate Affairs staff to engage APHA Affiliates in priority advocacy activities. Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred. The incumbent should have three to five years of experience working in an association government relations department or on Capitol Hill, preferably on health-related issues. Exceptional communications skills, including writing and oral abilities are required. Strong computer skills are required. Previous experience with online advocacy systems highly desired. Applicants should have outstanding interpersonal relationship skills.
Salary mid 60’s, commensurate with experience.
Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Mon- Fri. (daytime). Number of openings: 1.
