This is a professional managerial position reporting to the Managing Director, Strategic Communication & Content, responsible for directing the organization's social and traditional media communications strategy. The successful candidate works cross-functionally with various departments, including digital publishing, web development, public affairs, advocacy and marketing. The Senior Director’s key responsibility is to raise awareness and understanding of member architects as construction industry leaders and the AIA as an authoritative resource among targeted audiences across new and traditional media platforms.
Develop and implement new and traditional media strategies that achieve AIA strategic and operating goals by developing engaging content.
Manage and direct the digital and traditional media portion of the public awareness campaign, including publicity for all AIA public opinion and trend-related surveys.
Develop and lead a cross-functional team responsible for the social media efforts related to the management of AIA’s social media presence.
Collaborate with Digital Publishing and Honors & Awards to coordinate promotion of stories important to the profession.
Develop, nurture, and expand relationships with industry bloggers, key reporters, editors, producers, etc. to ensure that the AIA is positioned as a reliable, credible source.
Serve as AIA spokesperson as warranted and prepare executive level and topical experts for media interviews.
Ensure all disseminated material is on message and adheres to the AIA’s standards of quality.
Provide local components with public/social/media relations counsel to localize core brand messages and enhance the quality of relationships between components and their media outlets.

Demonstrated successful track record in leading the development, execution, and ongoing optimization of a comprehensive digital and social strategy for a brand or organization.
Must have a strong ability to position the Institute/member as a credible, reliable source.
Highly polished interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated experience in meeting deadlines under pressure, working well with peers and senior management.
Excellent writing skills that adapt to the various traditional and social media platforms.
Bachelors degree, preferably in journalism or communications with a minimum of seven years experience in public relations, social and traditional media environments. Knowledge of Meltwater or comparable media list management software is preferred.
