Reporting to the Associate Dean for Communications and Marketing, Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), Harvard Public Affairs and Communications (HPAC), the Associate Director of Communications and Outreach, Division of Continuing Education (DCE) partners closely with the Dean of DCE, the Executive Director, Strategic Growth Initiatives for DCE, and DCE faculty and staff to identify, frame, and deliver messages, particularly focused on nontraditional students and life-long learning, to internal and external audiences through proactive public relations activities, including media relations, writing, social media outreach, and influencer engagement.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Works with the Associate Dean for Communications and Marketing, FAS, HPAC; the Dean of DCE; and the Executive Director, Strategic Growth Initiatives for DCE to develop and implement strategic communications plans for DCE and HPAC;
Partners with Executive Director, Strategic Growth Initiatives for DCE to understand DCE's business goals and support them through proactive public relations activities;
Writes news releases, Harvard Gazette articles, and other materials intended to achieve positive coverage and create favorable impressions in campus, local, national, and international media;
Cultivates strong relationships with campus and external reporters and publications that cover continuing education and future of lifelong learning;
Proactively pitches to, fields inquiries from, and coordinates with both external and campus media;
Writes communications to internal audiences and Harvard stakeholders, including leadership, faculty, students, staff, and alumni;
Writes talking points and prepares briefings and presentations for the Dean of DCE in support of media interviews, speaking engagements and other meetings, as needed;
Provides strategic guidance and support to Dean of DCE regarding social media, including advising on content for his personal channels;
Provides event support, helping to plan and execute, as well as attending events as needed;
Develops and maintains strong relationships with DCE leadership, as well as DCE faculty, students, and staff;
Must be flexible in working with deadlines and schedules, since Harvard's electronic news platforms often demand deadline-driven content;
Required to be on-call as assigned;
Other duties as assigned.
The Associate Director of Communications and Outreach, DCE will work closely with the Executive Director, Strategic Growth Initiatives, with a dotted line reporting structure.

BA/BS required along with at least seven or more years of related experience. The ideal candidate must have direct experience implementing a variety of public relations activities, including developing and implementing organizational communications plans, working with the media, and writing for internal and external audiences. S She/he must also have experience advising and working closely with a senior leader.
She/he must also have exceptional interpersonal, project management, and reporting, writing, and editing skills, and a proven record of working collaboratively with a wide range of constituents. Though a self-starter, the candidate must be able to work as part of a larger, complex, and evolving team and to balance interests and needs of a variety of stakeholders. Strong experience deploying social media to build thought leadership preferred. Strong experience with digital communications channels, including knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO) strategies and keyword research, also preferred. Basic understanding of or previous experience in marketing communications a plus.
Should have a demonstrated record of success in positions of progressive responsibility in communications working for complex and fast-paced organizations. Should also possess the ability to set priorities and manage competing demands. Experience working in higher education strongly preferred, as well as an interest in and knowledge of the educational landscape related to nontraditional students and life-long learners.
