Advertised Summary Job Description: Reporting to the Executive Director of Communications and Public Affairs, the Alumni Communications Manager will support the Development and Alumni Relations in its fundraising and affinity-building goals. S/he will write and edit all alumni and development communications, including event invitations, fundraising appeal letters, and donor-related publications. The Alumni Communications Manager also will play a vital role in showcasing alumni achievements by producing the alumni e-newsletter and other web and print content. S/he will track these efforts using metrics, in order to be sure we are reaching out to alumni effectively both to fundraise and to engage our graduates, making them active members of the Law School Community.
Serves as liaison to the development and alumni relations office. The alumni communications manager will write and edit invitations, save-the-date notices, fundraising letters and other affinity building publications. S/he will prepare event materials and attend alumni events that may occur outside the regular business day.
The alumni communications manager will write, edit and source content for alumni and development-related material on the Columbia Law School site and other platforms as needed. The alumni communications manager will follow the news, and work with the Razor's Edge database and the research arm of the Development to generate story ideas, including alumni profiles, and produce a monthly alumni newsletter. Person must be detail-oriented, organized, and a self-starter who likes to come up with new ideas and make them happen.
An interest in communications across multiple platforms is a must, with an interest in creating, or helping to create, video a big advantage for a candidate. The alumni communications manager will organize and orchestrate photo coverage of alumni events, and produce galleries and any subsequent photo coverage of those events for the website and other materials. This position will collaborate with other alumni and career services offices as relevant and liaise with other Columbia University offices to address administrative fundraising issues for Law School alumni as they relate to the larger institution.
General Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required plus 4-6 years of non-profit communications and digital communications experience. Must have: superior writing talent, strong strategic planning, and implementation skills; ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally; ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously; excellent interpersonal skills. Familiarity with email programs such as Mailchimp, and experience creating newsletters a plus. This is a multifaceted, pivotal job for a high-energy, multi-faceted, talented person.
