Anderson University’s Office of Marketing and Communication invites applications for a full-time position as Executive Director of Public Relations. Actively engage, cultivate, and manage external relationships to ensure media and PR coverage surrounding Anderson University news, special events, public announcements, and other projects as needed.
Collaborate with senior leadership to develop communications strategies that will broaden AU’s influence and support the university’s mission.
Prepare news releases, talking points, op eds, media pitches and other written materials.
Develop, implement, and evaluate annual and quarterly communication plans across the varied audiences and channels.
Serve as university spokesperson during times of crisis to protect the university’s reputation and deflect negative perceptions that may arise.
Oversee the generation of digital media and social media content.
Develop and refine the AU’s "core" messages to ensure organizational consistency
Coach, train, and support executive staff, including the President and Senior Leadership, on public communication for media outlets and AU press releases
Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations, email communications and other supporting material for the President, Senior VP for Administration and Brand and marketing as needed
Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, and the AU website
Serve as primary editor for the AU’s website
Strong leadership skills, with demonstrated experience in the supervision and management of personnel.
Supervise staff including training, evaluating, motivating, resolving problems and conflicts, and building a service-oriented team.
Build relationships with media to advance AU’s brand and messaging opportunities
Other duties as assigned.
Significant communications experience that includes a blend of advocacy and media relations (at least 5 years in a similar role)
Must have a well-developed understanding of the practices and culture of each media market including but not limited to web, radio, television, print, etc.
Strong familiarity and commitment to Christian higher education
A strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes in a national communications environment
Ability to coach and support senior leaders as spokespersons
Ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages, and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels
Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communications strategies
Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently
Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to "manage by influence"
High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
A thorough understanding of social media and digital strategy, trends and evaluation methods
