Hobart and William Smith Colleges seeks a faculty colleague to help build an exciting new and popular minor in Entrepreneurial Studies. This is a three-year, non-tenure track faculty position beginning in January 1, 2018. Responsibilities include teaching courses for the minor, serving as a faculty advisor for students, developing curriculum and supporting co-curricular programming. Successful candidates should have a Ph.D. or terminal degree (ABDs will be considered) in an appropriate field related (broadly) to entrepreneurship and documented entrepreneurial experience, whether in the public, private, or non-profit arenas. This faculty member will work closely with the minor steering committee and the current faculty of the minor.
Entrepreneurial Studies is designed to develop leaders for the 21st Century by leveraging the analytical and critical thinking skills of a liberal arts education. By providing our students with the conceptual understanding, practical skills, and ethical structure necessary for social, global or private sector leadership, this program will develop students who are capable of creating new organizations or to be powerful agents of change within existing organizations. Practical skills taught include technical writing, oral presentation, Microsoft Excel for accounting and statistical functions, networking, and teamwork.
Core courses in this interdisciplinary minor explore the foundations of entrepreneurial leadership, economics principles, quantitative tools, and ethics. These core courses are supplemented by electives, both within the program and in other departments. All students must complete a senior capstone course that will require students to identify and tackle a real-life challenge in the social, economic and global environment and allows them to pitch proposals for their ventures.
Teaching 5 classes per year, including the capstone course for the minor. Depending on the educational background of the successful candidate, one or more of the following courses will be expected:Â ENTR 101: Entrepreneurial Leadership, ENTR 120: Economics Principles for the Entrepreneur, and ENTR 201: Quantitative Tools for the Entrepreneur and ENTR 220: Social Innovation for the Entrepreneur.
Developing curriculum for the minor, on topics such as social entrepreneurship/enterprise, social/environmental justice, legal concepts, business ethics, tech entrepreneurship, or organizational leadership.
Advising students within the minor.
Supporting and developing co-curricular programming in coordination with the Centennial Center for Leadership.
Ideal candidates will have a true passion for entrepreneurship (not just for-profit) and a clear vision for the value of entrepreneurial studies within a liberal arts curriculum and be able to articulate that vision to students, faculty, parents, alumni, and community partners.
These candidates will also display a zeal for interdisciplinary collaboration. In addition, preferred qualifications include:
Ph.D. in Education, Entrepreneurship, Economics, Sociology, Business, Management, Leadership, Community Development, Organizational Behavior, Organizational Development, Philosophy, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Public Affairs, Public Management, or a related field;
Previous teaching experience with a record of strong teaching or evidence of teaching potential;
Excellent written and oral communications skills; and,
Commitment to the role and mission of a selective private liberal arts college.
