General Purpose: Reporting to the Dean of Yale Summer Session, the Communications Manager supports the creation, management and execution of communication plans for Yale Summer Session, a division of the Center for International and Professional Experience. Synthesizes and communicates information on complex academic programs for audiences including the Yale Community (students and faculty), and to visiting students and partners in the US and internationally. Develops and manages forward looking strategic communications and outreach in traditional and new media–both externally and internally–in order to enhance Yale Summer Session’s reputation and communicate Yale Summer Session’s messages. Chairs the CIPE Outreach Committee and assists in developing and implementing campus-wide communications strategies for CIPE in collaboration with division stakeholders.
Required Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and four years of experience in website design, production, marketing, project management or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated ability in developing communications for a range of media. Proven ability working with consultants in design, photography, or video. Ability with social media including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Skills using non-traditional media such as video, blogging and live-streamed discussions.
Demonstrated excellent writing skills. Ability to write for both print and online media. Demonstrated skills using online media for communications or marketing. Editorial judgment and ability to work under pressure and high attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills. Ability to provide leadership and influence change. Ability to think strategically and take personal initiative.
Strong ability to evaluate and solve communications needs quickly. Proven ability to manage multiple projects to deadline amidst competing priorities. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team structure. Knowledge of an academic environment, needs of administration and communication preferences of faculty, students and staff.
Demonstrated ability to use data about impact and efficacy to inform and adapt communication strategies. Proficiency with content-management systems, MS Word and PowerPoint. Proven skills with graphical design suites such as Adobe Creative Suite. Proven skills with Drupal CMS.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Bachelor’s Degree. Experience in journalism or media relations and knowledge of Associated Press style. Ability to write about technical programs (physical, engineering sciences). Experience in University or Internal Communications, Media Relations, Journalism, Project Management, Graphic Design, Online information architecture or content strategy a plus.
