Position Summary This position supports and steers FPA’s national public relations efforts through a variety of channels to different audiences. The Public Relations and Project Manager, who must be based in Denver, Colo., provides resources and customer service to FPA chapter leaders, works regularly with the media and other FPA staff, and provides project management of key activities relating to the development and delivery of practice management content to association members.
Job Responsibilities •Coordinates promotional aspects of the organization’s consumer services programs, including Financial Planning Week, Money Smart Week, and others. •Represents FPA’s public relations team as part of the Financial Planning Coalition. •Helps write and develop content for organization’s newsletters, blogs, columns, talking points, executive materials for conferences and events, etc. •Works with FPA’s Public Relations Team Leader to develop and maintain uniform VIP presentations, including PowerPoint and written speeches. •Works with FPA’s Public Relations Team Leader to schedule and deliver media training presentations to members and chapters (both in-person and online). •Coordinates production aspects of general sessions at FPA conferences to ensure a high level of consistency in messaging and visual appeal. •Tracks FPA’s media relations efforts and provides ongoing updates to key internal and external stakeholders. •Writes and distributes all press releases, posts to press room, develops messaging for pushing news through other channels, coordinates embargo distribution (when appropriate), etc. •Manages and updates organization media lists, including lists for chapter use. •Responds to reporters seeking input from FPA members and reviews/approves reporter queries going out through FPA MediaSource. •Proactively engages reporters and editors to further forge relationships and pitches story ideas to reporters as needed. •Works with FPA’s Public Relations Team Leader to coordinate and execute media tours twice each year in New York City. •Coordinates SmartBrief, a bi-weekly member newsletter, with a third-party provider. •Coordinates Take 5, a monthly chapter “newsletter” that promotes key happenings in the association nationally. •Coordinates the development and distribution of Consumer-Oriented Articles (COAs) by a third-party provider. •Develops and distributes ongoing P.R. and related communications to chapters. •Provides assistance to organization’s chapter and member stakeholders to ensure they have appropriate communications & PR tools and resources. •Ensures online media and press room resources stay updated, timely and accurate. •Works with FPA’s Public Relations Team Leader to identify, vet and coordinate opportunities to partner with national media brands and other third-party partners. •Provides important project management coordination that supports the development and delivery of content related to practice management. •Updates relevant communications and P.R. sections of website. •Supports key managers/executives as needed.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities •Ability to work well independently, as well as in team settings. •Strong technical writing skills, including press release writing, editing and proofreading. •Knowledge of AP Style. •Excellent interpersonal and communications skills. •Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks, with an emphasis on organization, prioritization and time management.
Education & Experience •Five+ years of experience in public relations. •Project management experience a plus. •Degree in communications/journalism/public relations or equivalent experience. •Proficiency in all Microsoft applications; experience in online/web/HTML environment a plus. •Association and/or financial services experience preferred. •Must be based, or willing to relocate, to Denver, Colo.
