Position Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Science Communications Specialist.
In this role, the successful candidate The Science Communications Specialist is responsible for the internal communications for the Office of Science and research (OSR). She/he develops communication strategies and comprehensive plans tailored to specific projects / needs of the research community, and contributes written and web-based materials. Manages the development of Research Mission marketing materials to be distributed to the Research Community, as well as external audiences (peer institutions, sponsors, donors, prospective students, etc). Oversees the production of the research communitys weekly newsletter (OSR Weekly Announcements) and participates in the planning and execution of the Senior Vice President / Vice Dean for Sciences monthly news digest. Responsible for content creation and management of the internal Research portal and pages related to Research Reputation and Engagement projects. Maintains oversight of proper use of OSR branding for all OSR communications. Writes compelling and clear communications about research administration and accomplishments from the research community. Provides support to OSR administration on projects that aim to communicate important /compelling information relevant to the research enterprise. Collaborates closely with the Department of Communications on projects involving the research community. Performs a variety of complicated tasks with a wide degree of creativity and latitude. Brings creative solutions to current challenges and applies strong analytical skills.
Oversees internal communications for the Research Mission, including the production of the Office of Science and Researchs weekly newsletter, the Vice Deans monthly news digest (Spotlight on Science), and dedicated email announcements.
Responsible for informing the research community about new initiatives, systems and processes for conducting research, training, and other relevant news.
Assists with communications from senior research administration leadership and helps develop / edit PowerPoint presentations, as needed.
Works with OSR teams to develop communication plans as needed and develops clear, concise messaging to support related tactics.
Takes the lead on managing communications projects for the RRE team that involve external institutional customers and serves as the team/project representative in related meetings. Works closely with OSR Project Coordinator and Project Managers to ensure projects are progressing as planned.
Collaborates closely with the internal communications team in the Department of Communications and Marketing by contributing to their editorial calendar and drafting content that highlights our research enterprise, including research accomplishments, faculty awards and honors, and community events. Assists with special internal communications projects as requested by the Senior Director of Institutional Communications.
Works closely with the OSR Director of Research Emergency Management and Enterprise Resilience to develop communications and initiatives that educate and inform the research community about preparing for emergencies, with the goal of minimizing impact on research activities.
Creates marketing materials as necessary for the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and other units within OSR.
Maintains oversight of OSR branding guidelines and proper usage across OSR.
Maintains and drafts Research Mission website content and assists other OSR teams with unit websites as needed.
Responsible for Research intranet sites (SharePoint) to ensure that the research resources and support available to the community are clearly represented and readily accessible. Drafts and maintains content of OSR-owned pages in collaboration with unit subject matter experts.
Creates surveys to evaluate the effectiveness of OSR communication channels and engagement initiatives.
Oversees and maintains OSR-owned list servs and distribution lists.
Oversees special events coordination for senior research administration and RRE.
Minimum Qualifications: To qualify you must have a Bachelors Degree required, Masters degree in Journalism, communications, healthcare, public administration, public health or related field preferred. Previous experience in science writing within a research institution is highly desirable. Ability to prioritize, work independently and manage multiple tasks is essential. Highly developed interpersonal skills and teamwork. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate and present effectively to medical and scientific communities. Able to convey complex ideas fluently to any audience. Customer-service oriented. Strong and effective oral and writing skills; active listening skills. Personal characteristics include team oriented, creative solution-oriented, enthusiastic, patient, and proactive. PowerPoint, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign skills a plus. Marketing/public relations experience a plus.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree in journalism, communications, healthcare, public administration, public health, orrelated field
