The assistant director of communications as a member of CMU's University Communications team plays a key role in advancing the awareness and reputation of the university and the engagement of faculty, staff, current and future students, alumni and friends. This position reports to the director of communications. The individual will collaborate with faculty, staff and students within a specified academic college to identify story angles and capture stories that are shared across a multitude of communications channels, such as our online news site, social media channels, internal communications and email news digest. With an emphasis on executive and internal communications this individual at times does speechwriting and other communications on behalf of university leaders. The assistant director also collaborates with human resources and other service units to identify communications needs and opportunities, working to ensure CMU's employees, students and key external stakeholders are informed and motivated.
Bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism, public relations or a related communications field. 3 years experience related to the duties and responsibilities of this position. Excellent writing and editing skills. Proven experience using AP style. Demonstrated ability to creatively communicate across a variety of media. Ability to gather, interpret and understand complex information in order to produce content that engages and motivates target audiences. Proven ability to effectively manage multiple projects, prioritize, stay organized, be detail-oriented and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, team-driven environment. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with other writers and subject matter experts.
