Deputy Director, American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene

ASTMH, the largest international scientific organization of tropical infectious disease experts is seeking a Deputy Director. Based in Chicago, ASTMH is a well-respected leader in the global health arena with a growing membership from research, academia, government, philanthropy and the for-profit communities. This newly created position reflects ASTMH’s growth in size, influence and global reach. The Deputy Director will support the Executive Director’s engagement with new and existing external global health partners and play a strong role in the streamlining, coordination and growth of core aspects of the society.
Program Development and Management:
Serve as Deputy Director for each of the five subgroups (special interest groups under the umbrella of ASTMH), offering an informed perspective on the unique needs of this particular community providing regular and ongoing strategic support that includes governance matters, membership recruitment and retention, raising the profile within the particular fields and across the parent society, and subgroup-specific development.
Working with the Executive Director, advance efforts on tropical medicine/global health US funding and policy goals. This includes developing and/or implementing strategies and tactics to achieve effective outcomes.
Working with the Executive Director, lead the development of the Council and Executive Committee’s meeting agendas and briefing packets assuring a focus on strategic goals and objectives. Administrative and logistic support provided.
Manage the Society’s annual budget process and will work with appropriate staff who manage the day-to-day planning.
Contribute to the implementation of ASTMH’s strategic goals and objectives as well as the overall management of the organization and facilitating coordination between various projects and activities.
The Deputy Director will support the Executive Director and elected leaders in developing and implementing the strategic plan. The Deputy Director will support the Executive Director’s commitment to a positive working environment, strong staff morale, and a culture of teamwork and mutual support among all staff.
ASTMH seeks a mission-driven individual, committed to the advancement and success of ASTMH. This person will be eager to work with a team that is dedicated to further elevating and strengthening ASTMH and its ability to one day, see its vision of an end of tropical infectious diseases realized.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in tropical medicine/global health, global health research and development, or a related health or science field; professional scientific society or similar nonprofit experience working with volunteers, staffing committees, working within limited windows of available time of leaders and volunteers; demonstrated experience working/leading a team, working in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines and goals, and experience working with highly accomplished, distinguished members of the global scientific community who are volunteering their time. Government relations experience is highly desirable.
This role requires strong commitment to helping the team gain new skills and develop professionally. Excellent inter-personal, oral and writing skills are a must. Proficiency in PowerPoint is a plus. Travel is required at least twice per year.
