This position is responsible for leading media relations strategy and execution for the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, science departments in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the Office for Research, and scientific research centers. The position also is responsible for writing content for the web, videos and other mediums for use in the University’s marketing communications efforts and working across teams to identify placements with the strongest outcome for content.

Leading media relations strategy and execution for the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, the science departments in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of Research and Northwestern’s scientific research centers, including writing news releases and pitch letters and proactively contacting reporters -- as well as responding to, and managing, media inquiries.
Establishing ongoing relationships with reporters across the local, national, and international media landscapes, including scientific journals, tier-1 publications and broadcast outlets, as well as new and hybrid media.
Writing and pitching news about engineering, science and research for Northwestern’s website, electronic newsletter, print publications and videos.
Developing strategic concepts, synthesizing complex information, and developing mediable stories for use in marketing communications.
Coordinating with other members of the Global Marketing and Communications staff to promote the University’s engineering, science and research activities.
Identifying news opportunities by working with communications and marketing partners in the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, the sciences in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and in research centers.

Growing and developing relationships with media contacts in engineering and the sciences and working with national and local media to place news stories and identify content for publication in these outlets.
Developing and repurposing content for social media as well as working to identify and develop additional platforms for news content and stories.
Other duties as assigned.
Candidates for this position must have strong media relations skills with existing science relationships at top tier as well as specialist and hybrid media publications.
The role requires strong writing skills with specific expertise in writing about science and engineering; an undergraduate degree in English, journalism, public relations, marketing, communications, or a related field. In-house experience at a science-focused organization or corporation, preferred.

This position demands experience in developing media strategies, pitching news reporters, identifying and synthesizing relevant content, and writing about engineering, science and research; sound interpersonal communication skills; exceptional writing skills; strong organizational skills; and the ability to work well with faculty members, other University staff and reporters and editors. Experience working in fast-paced mission-driven environments is also key.
