The Assistant Director of Development works with the Neurology Development team in solicitation and stewardship of donors, volunteer management, planning and execution of fundraising and donor events, and development marketing. Typical schedule will be Monday through Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm. This will include some nights, early morning, and weekend work with travel for selected events required. The Assistant Director carries a small portfolio of up to 35 donors and prospective donors, and solicits individual and sponsorship support for the Department. The Assistant Director develops, deploys and promotes key components of departmental programming to engage and thank donors, motivates and manages volunteers and guides them in their event responsibilities. The individual serves as the primary office liaison to volunteers planning and hosting events, and proactively identifies, develops, implements and evaluates new opportunities to engage, steward and recognize leadership volunteers and major donors. The Assistant Director develops and oversees marketing and communications efforts on behalf of the Department.
Working closely with senior staff members, annually raises $50,000 from individuals, corporations and foundations to advance the work of the Department of Neurology, including the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research.
Works collaboratively with colleagues across medicine and the institution to build stronger donor relations, acknowledgment, and recognition processes, assisting department gift officers with stewardship of donors, ensuring donors remain connected to Johns Hopkins.
Works closely with board members, including the Project RESTORE board and Packard Center board. Works with volunteer committees of the Pacing for Parkinson's race, Fiesta 5K race for ALS Research, and third party events overseeing meaningful volunteer engagement opportunities, cultivating volunteers for future philanthropic support.
Responsible for the planning and implementation of a comprehensive plan of events and projects that strategically engage donors and provide benefits to the Johns Hopkins Neurology Development Department and Johns Hopkins Medicine. This includes board meetings, donors recognition receptions and dinners, donor-funded lectures, symposiums, memorial services, the Annual AAN Alumni Reception, the Packard Center Fiesta 5k, as well as all Packard Center, Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorder Center, Project RESTORE and any other potential divisions' meetings and events.
Identifies strategies, goals and metrics for success for various events, and ensure attendance meets (preferably exceeds) the predetermined expectations and goals.
Create a comprehensive project plan identifying action items to accomplish fundraising goals, milestones and due dates.
Plans and executes events from start to finish, using independent judgment to create event timelines, advise development staff accordingly, and set/stay within a given budget. Plans and oversees events, focusing on logistics. Provides essential support in follow up to all events.
Manages the event calendar and creates briefings in relation to Neurology Development events for President and Provost of the University, Dean/CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine, President of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, Neurologist-in-Chief, Department Directors, and senior leadership of DAR and FJHM.
Acts as key Development Events liaison with Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine Senior Management, Directors, DAR staff, DRDE, Communications and Public Affairs staff, faculty, trustees, and VIPS. Staffs this constituency at events, as needed.
Communications and Marketing
Authors, plans and oversees the writing of a variety of stewardship materials, collaborating with faculty and development colleagues as appropriate.
Responsible for creating and delivering marketing ideas and activities for events tied to cultivation and stewardship of donors, especially for third party events. Creates marketing materials, manages projects, and ensures consistency in messaging.
Serves as the liaison to Central Development Communications Office and Johns Hopkins Medicine Communications Office.
Bachelor's degree required. Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Three years related experience required. Additional experience in alumni relations, event production and management, graduate school, higher education, fundraising, volunteer management or donor relations preferred.
The successful candidate will possess the ability to build relationships with donors and volunteers, develop measurements to analyze efficiency and success of programs, and implement effective, strategic improvements where needed. She/he will demonstrate critical thinking skills; she/he will have great attention to detail, organizational skills, initiative, exceptional writing skills, oral communication, and proofing abilities, the ability to set priorities effectively, work on multiple projects simultaneously, and to solve problems and work both independently and within teams. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, especially Word and Excel, are required. Must have an openness to learn new software and database programs. It is imperative that all team members present themselves with professionalism and exercise good judgment, diplomacy, and discretion with diverse populations and situations. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. for short distances - must be able to maneuver subway system and/or transport oneself to various off-site locations. Must be able to sit or stand for one to three hours.
